What is Competition Cheer?

Sideline cheer encompasses cheering for a team, such as football or basketball, and the cheerleaders’ main goal is to engage fans and encourage the team to play hard. Competitive cheer is not cheering on another team but instead involves performing routines against other cheer teams, where they are judged by a panel of cheerleading experts based on difficulty and execution of tumbling skills, stunts, flexibility, synchronicity, and facial expressions.

It is a higher level of cheer than sideline cheer and involves more focused practice time and commitment, as the team relies on every member to put in the work to make their performance the best it can be.

Our governing body, the Oregon Cheer Coaches Association (OCCA) has rules requiring that any cheerleader who participates in Competition Cheer, must have also participated in Sideline Cheer that same season. With this rule, we do not open up registration for Competition Cheer to the public, as it is only open to those who are part of our current season of Sideline Cheer.

This next season, our competition program will be open to 4th-8th graders. We will be holding tryouts  August 21st, to assess those interested in Competition Cheer. Teams for competition cheer will be announced the week of August 24th. More information around try-outs and our competition cheer season will be forthcoming.

For Competition Cheer, we have our Cheer Camp opportunity opening March 6th. Cheer Camp will be an overnight camp at Great Wolf Lodge, August July 22nd-25th. Cost is $625 and includes all food/drinks, overnight accommodations, waterpark entry,  UCA cheer camp instruction, gifts and team apparel for camp. Current camp capacity for our team is 20 cheerleaders. We will move to a waitlist for camp once we reach 20.

Great Wolf Lodge Cheer Camp is open ONLY to rising 6th-8th graders (meaning you will be in these grades in September 2026) and who have previous cheer experience. If you have cheered with another program previously, that counts as previous cheer experience.

If you do not meet the grade requirement or are a first time cheerleader, no worries- you will get to attend our Readiness Camp happening locally August 4th-7th, where you will learn the basics of cheer and learn our cheers and motions for the sideline season.

Prices for Competition Cheer have not yet been finalized but will be communicated ASAP.
